Location
Kyleakin is a pretty fishing village situated on the south eastern tip of Skye and is close to the Skye Bridge providing quick access onto the mainland. The village itself has good local services including a village shop, post office, hotels, B&B's and pubs, The larger village of Kyle of Lochalsh just across the Bridge offers enhanced facilities including a supermarket, leisure center and railway station. Everything changed with the opening of the Skye Bridge and the end of the ferry service. The bridge now comes ashore a little west of Kyleakin, and visitors only come to the village if they positively choose to do so. As a result, Kyleakin is a quieter and very much more attractive place than it used to be. Kyleakin has its own ruined castle, which can be visited by a short walk. Built in the late 15th century, Castle Moil was a Keep for a Norwegian princess by the name of Saucy Mary, who, legend has it, suspended a chain from Kyleakin to Kyle to levy a toll from passing ships. A similar regime on the Skye Bridge has just recently been stopped for passing motorists with the removal of extortionate tolls. All of this makes Kyleakin a fantastic place to stay to tour the Island of Skye.
